August 14th 2011 Drive

Post  Ralph Longo on Thu Jun 30, 2011 10:07 am

This will be a monster back roads drive to Jefferson City. While I do not have the absolute specifics, you can plan on over 100 miles one way. I'm looking into touring the Capitol building and we'll for sure be going to Central Dairy, home of the best ice cream I have literally ever had.

More info soon to follow.

Update 7-14

After Tony and I discussing route versions this should be the final, final version Laughing

We'll meet at the war memorial on Belleau Creek rd directly across from Quick Trip just south of Hwy 70, we'll be leaving at 10am. Google says it's about 2 hours, that puts us in town about lunchtime which we'll do first, then we'll tour the Capitol building, then we'll go get ice cream. This will be one of the longer drives we do, so plan accordingly time wise Very Happy

Lewis and Clark

Post  tony.elkin on Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:51 pm

I am going to try a pre-run on this sun the 10th in my Daily Driver.

I think the name of the cruise should be "Route 66 to the Capitol Cruise"

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] For the Route Map

UPDATE!!....UPDATE!!....UPDATE!!....UPDATE!!....UPDATE!!....

Alright I went on the pre-run (RECON) of the route and I have had a change of heart.
I went down to Ellisvile along Clarkson Rd hwy 340 to Hwy 100 (Route 66) there was a nice new mall at Wilwood with a starbucks and everything. Starting there going along Hwy 100 (Route 66) to Hwy 44 to Hwy 50 to Jeff City. This was an "OK" route. But, that is it.

Now, on the way back from Jeff City i crossed the River and came back on Hwy 94 (the Lewis and Clark Trail) Now that was fun! Especially btwn McKittrick and Marthasville. There is just enough curves mixed in with a lot of fast straight aways (good for passing or clearing out the exhaust)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

At McKittrick (North of Herman) is a perfect place to stop. Its about 1/2 way and there is a brand new Gas station, convenience store, and a HUGE parking lot.

The route itself starts in St. Charles County (Home of the 1st Capitol) at the corner of Hwy 40 and Hwy 94 (Lewis and Clark Trail) goes along the river to Jeff City (Home of the 2nd Capitol).
I thought about the name of this cruise should be "The Lewis and Clark Cruise" or the "Lewis and Clark Tour the Capitols Cruise". Total miles is about 100, and it will take about 2 hours including the stop at McKittrick.

anyway her is the map for the cruise.

That's as far as I got with servicing it...and do a little exploratory with removing the evaporative emissions equipment. I had just enough time to do that...then all heck broke loose with work and home stuff. I haven't been home in two weeks.

Drill weekends on the first weekend of the month mean that the second Sunday of the month is the week we'll have the drives.

Here is the map as it exists before I do a pre run, I doubt much, if anything, will change though since most of the roads are known to be at least 2 real lanes. We'll meet at the war memorial on Belleau Creek and hwy 70 across from Quick Trip. We'll leave at 10am, Google says it's about 2.5 hours, we'll see Laughing That puts us in town at lunch which we'll do first, then we'll tour the Capitol building, then we'll go get ice cream Very Happy I'm betting this will be a longer day, so plan accordingly.

Laughing Ha, I was just building a map on Google.

Ralph you want to do a pre-run this weekend?

Route 66 to the Capitol

Post  tony.elkin on Fri Jul 08, 2011 10:49 am

Ok so this is what im thinking. we do a pre run this weekend ( out be out of state next weekend) to check out route 94.

I would like to come back on route 100 along the south side of river to check out that side.

So, for the actual cruise we go down there on route 100 (route 66) to route 50 to Jeff City, then back either using 94 or 100.

Here is the route to Jeff City

Changed my post Tony, your's might be a better route to take. No can afford a pre run this week, probably more like 3, we'll talk about that when we can.

On the way back, people can just take the fastest route for them, whatever that may be.

That is what Im thinking too. They can either cross the river and head back to STL on HWY 70 if they are in a hurry to get back, or they can follow us on the way back along the river.

I was thinking that we could start at the Sonic in Chester field, and either go down route 109 to 100 or we can go down Clarkson (340) to 100.

The Target that the Grand Vizier speaks of is ~2 minutes to the east...much larger lot with no annoying fast food traffic.

And I doubt anyone will want more than a snack before the drive, so we would just be in the way at Sonic Sad

I fixed the map, I meant to just turn on to 100 from 109.

Unfortunately my wife has blind-sided me with a trip to Florida (Orlando, no less...this would be oh, about the 6th ring of hell in my opinion...in August for crying out loud!). It is to meet some really good friends of ours that are vacationing in the States from France this year...so that is good, I just wish it wasn't in Florida in August.

Sigh! My schedule is never going to let me have any fun.

What REALLY sucks Andy, is that I did the pre-run today and Hwy O and as Tony pointed out already, Hwy 94 between 47 and 19 is absolutely SPECTACULAR!!! Oh my goodness, elevation changes, both long high speed and tight slow turns. Just an amazing drive with beauty after getting off of 70 onto the back roads.
